What an awesome system. Full action, great cinematics, fun.

My players were running with it within ten minutes and spent their time with the adventure rather than the rules.

Everybody enjoyed, veterans as new players.

I like it and it will be fun to run Star Wars adventures and material that is still out there.

The best edition of the best Spanish RPG ever. Highly recommended if you want a proper Middle Ages adventure. The 'fantastic' aspect of the world could be actually optional and use the system for just plain medieval sessions.

Fires of Amatsumara
by Darren K. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 01/16/2022 16:54:05

While some of the content was geared towards a sci-fi rustic tv show, I feel the biggest perk of this product is the recap of d6 Sci Fi Rules at the back. That was a HUGE surprise that I'd forgotten all about. I own all the D6 products in print, but for some reason I didn't have this one in my collection. I do wish the font was a little more plain text.

Aquelarre
by Ryan S. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 10/19/2020 11:02:00

This book is a work of art. I am very happy with the preimum version. The pages are matte with an excellent feel, compared to the glossy pages in the offset printed version. Not saying either is better, it depends on your preference. Personally, I think the extra cost for PoD with premium color is worth it.

This book has a vast amount of information and creativity within. I love just flipping through it. You will learn about history, belief, superstition, etc, and you will enjoy it!

And last but not least, the game is fun as hell! This is all my group has played since I got it. We are now trying to amass everything about Aquelarre in English. It would be nice to have some more translations, but honestly there is so much content here (and in the Asturias supplement) that you can play this game for years without needing more.

Path of Horror (Storypath Cards)
by Timothy B. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 09/01/2020 14:57:59

Path of Horror is a Story Path Card collection From Nocturnal Media.

They retail for $11.99. DriveThruRPG also has them as PDFs you can print or POD for $3.99 and $11.99 respectively.

These cards in particular have a horror theme.

The Game Master keeps the "Theme" cards and then deals out 2-3 cards to each player. The play can then play their cards at appropriate times. In the end the Game Master can play the Climax cards.

The theme cards include things like "Lost Cause" or "Hint of Madness." Other cards are "Remembered Dream" or "Found Item" or "Lurker." The cards are all numbered, so lower number cards are played before higher ones. They add a bit of color to your game and a bit more roleplaying and input from the players. They also require the Game Master to think a little more on their feet than usual since not everything can be planned out.

Currently, my son is using them in his "Curse of Strahd" D&D 5 game and I am planning on using them in my "Ordinary World" for Night Shift and "War of the Witch Queens" for Basic-era D&D.

There is quite a lot that can be done with these cards and since they rely on player input they can also be reused a lot.

What attracted me to them originally was the cover of course. The art reminded me of this card deck I had as a kid.

Certainly worth giving them a try in your games.

Please note that this is a module/suppliment for Aquelarre.

The book is wonderfully detailed with lovely original art, and the POD version is at a very high resolution. Worth every cent.

This is an exceptional dark historic demi fantastical rpg. Definitely for mature audiences who like games such as Chaosium family or even Harn. If you are intersted in running true medieval setting where the medieval mindset just also happened to be true. Then this one is for you.

Aquelarre: Brevarium
by Luis G. - L. D. S. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 02/18/2020 15:44:23

Remember that this is the "player's book" (or the lighter book the DM will take into to game evenings), with all the sets of rules. If you are looking to fully get into the game, go for the Core book that has all the juicy stuff inside. If you're not into PDFs or PODs, wait for the retail book that will hit retail shops in April /// From my MeWe group. Did I tell you to look for AQUELARRE RPG IN ENGLISH there? ///

Today, I received an order of DriveThruRPG print-on-demand Aquelarre books for my collection. They come from the print in the UK, and were received by standard mail with no surprise taxes attached.

Here (there) you have a comparison of the english edition of the Breviarium (print-on-demand) vs Spanish edition. English is supposed to be a language that has shorter words and sentences ... but this yankee breviarium is 20 pages longer than the spanish one, even when it uses the same font and layout ... The book is even thicker because of the heavier paper stock required by PODs. I do very much prefer the darker cover of the spanish edition. This one is only available in "standard color" (while it's greyscale, so it doesn't matter much).

The other item I received today is the Fatum Sperantia adventure that come bundled with the original DM screen not the three panel one that was published with the Kickstarter . They have wisely repurposed this forty pages adventure as an standalone issue. The POD is nice and recycles the full color central panels of that screen as front and back cover (although I would have made the title and Aquelarre logo stand out more). The inside is also printed in full color and looks very nice, in the line of the look of the Core book, while the POD printing is "standard color", so the ink is matte and it looks less appealing.

I'm waiting for my "premium color" copy Asturias Medievalia to hit my mailbox soon, so then I'll be able to compare

Asturies Medievalia
by Luis G. C. G. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 02/14/2020 16:51:05

So this came as a surprise. Nocturnal translated and published through DriveTruRPG the first supplement for Aquelarre: Asturies Medievalia!. This was also the first one published in spanish, shortly after the Core and Breviarium of the 3rd edition hit the shelves.

Asturias is my homeland, and when it came out I could not be any happier. It was a little softcover of just hundred pages that preceded the bigger hardcovers that would be published in the years to come. As for today, it is already out of stock.

Below you'll find the translated description of the book that apppears in the publisher website. For most of us, spaniards, it should be more than enough, but for most of you, not that versed in the geography, history and culture of the Iberian peninsula, I'd love to add some words. />

Asturias is a little region located in the northern shores of the Iberian peninsula. A green land wedged between the high and sheer mountains and the rocky shores of the Cantabrian. A lush green of pastures and dark forests, thriving in natural and unnatural life, populated by brave men with poor in riches, but wealthy in customs and lore.

After the muslim invasion of the eigth century, that made the visigothic kingdom of Toledo crumble in just a few years, the northern rim of it gave shelter to those fleeing the muslim rule. It was conquered but far from pacified. It was just a matter of years that a rebellion took place and expelled the muslim from that country. Thus, the chieftain Pelayo, destined to be the first king of the new Asturian kingdom, battled them at Covadonga, and crushed a much stronger muslim army with some Heavenly help. Hard to tell history from legend here, and you have a differente theory for each taste about the man and the battle. Anyway, the cross you see in the front of Asturies Medievalia exists; it's the "Cross of the Victory", guarded in the Cathedral of Oviedo. Its golden body is hollow, and keeps the remains of the cross that Virgin Mary gave Pelayo that day.

Over the centuries, the Asturian kingdom, and then the Kingdom of Leon when it crossed the mountains and could secure the land north of the river Duero and moved the capital, slowly (almost eight hundred years slow) drove south the Reconquista (the retaking of the land), the Court left Asturias behind, and Asturias went back to its mellow and sometimes shadowy day to day.

In the times of Aquelarre, Asturias, once shelter and cradle of the christian kingdoms, is a backwater land, not much different from how it was a millenia before, when the Astures battled the roman invader...

Aquelarre
by Rory H. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 02/08/2020 02:38:14

The rules are familar enough to anybody who likes RuneQuest style games, although there are a few differences in stats and skills. The setting is reminiscent of Ars Magica in it's 3rd edition - being a very dark, medieval world with a very high level of authenticity based on historical research.

Set specifically in the Spanish Peninsular (this was Spain's No.1 RPG - translated for the first time into English) during the 13/14th Century (High Medieval Period), it's less structured than Ars Magica and there is no default campaign as such. However, the emphasis on demonology, based on the Christian, Jewish and Islamic faiths of the time, as well as the name ('Aquelarre' means 'Coven') suggests that the characters will possibly be dabbling in the dark arts of magic or at least dealing with them. Magic is based upon alchemical lore, again well researched, evocative and with a big spell/ritual list, and there is a comprehensive host of angels and demons involved in the background, as well as a bestiary featuring creatures from Spanish folklore. There is a clever core mechanic where characters are rated on a two-headed scale of Rationality/Irrationality. This serves as a Sanity mechanic, of sorts: The more Irrational you are the more you believe in the supernatural (and the more capable you are to practice magic), but the more Rational you are, the more resistant you are to it.

The time period has the Spanish Peninsular made up of five competing nations, again well researched and presented here with lots of information about the history and medieval society. Supplements will detail each nation seperately - but there is lots here already. Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition (!) but you could well play in a campaign based around this sort of investigative organisation (or have them as antagonists), along with a lot of other societies you could join (including military orders or fraternities). There are several introductory scenarios included.

This is a very rich setting, beautifully illustrated in a massive book, which is very much a work of passion. The Kickstarter campaign encountered some tragedy along the way, but both Stewart Weick (RIP) and Lester Smith (the translater) as well as the original writers, Ricard Ibáñez and co. have done the English speaking audience a service for making this great game available for the first time.

If you want to try a true "medieval fantastic" game that stands away from the rest, you should consider trying this one. The senior spanish RPG is one that will put you in the middle of the hard reality of the day to day of Spanish middle ages. This is to Pendragon what "Unforgiven" is to "The house on the prairie".

With a twist of magic and folk tales.

After a succesful Kickstarter that turned into a sad, bumpy road, Nocturnal Games has done a great job translating the colorful, hugue 565 pages "Codex". The almost written from scrap 3rd edition of a game that has been running on tables since 1990 and has more than 40 titles in the different spanish editions.

I really hope you enjoy it.

PS: If you want to know more about the game or to be part of its growing fan-base, please meet us at "AQUELARRE RPG IN ENGLISH" community on MeWe
