GORE
by David C. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 02/02/2010 14:15:39

I'm not a big fan of percentile based RPG's so I did not find this game much use personally and therefore could not give it 5 stars. However, I found it was put together well and easy to read. I would imagine that anyone who likes percentile style games would find this product to be a welcome addition.

Mutant Future: Revised Edition (no-art version)
by David C. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 02/02/2010 14:07:18

So far I have had a great deal of fun with Mutant Future. It's character design process enables you to make pretty much any kind of mutant to explore a future laden with danger and ancient treasures. Who doesn't want to play a telekenetic wolf man who has to stop in the middle of battle to eat a slain enemy because his metabolism is so high? Who doesn't want to play a game that invented a monster as memorable as the spidergoat? Who doesn't want to descend into an ancient ruins to discover riches such as an energy gun or a case of instant soup? If you want fantasy adventure in a post apocalyptic world with radiation and mutants I highly suggest you give this a try.

Labyrinth Lord: Revised Edition (no-art version)
by David C. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 02/02/2010 13:59:17

Oh, the simple days of taking your 1st level magic user into a dungeon armed only with a dagger and magic missile and praying to every god in every dimension that you will survive to second level. The simple days when a goblin was a goblin, an orc was an orc and a dragon would probably kill half your party. Then the survivors would divvy up a huge amount of xp and gold.

If you remember fondly the days of old school gaming or would like try what us old guys talk about some times as we start to nod off at the table than I highly recomend this product. They have done a great job of presenting for the public a game that I started my RPG hobby with and still love today.

There were some good games on the market back in the 80s that used this system. This is a very good resource for that system. The "Deep ones" would be proud.

GORE

This one is mixed for me. While I like the concept of being able to produce "new" games that look like old games using the OGL, I am also left with the question of "Why play/buy GORE when I still have CoC?". From a design standpoint GORE is great. It does exactly what it is supposed to do and it does it well. It was one of the first "Old School" or "Retro-clone" games to hit the market, so it helped pave the way for the likes of "Labyrinth Lord" and others. And of course you can't argue the price really. While players of the old school game it is meant to emulate won’t get anything new here, fans will enjoy it and for new players it provides a small entry fee (as in 0$) to the hobby.

Labyrinth Lord

Basically D&D the way you remember it from back in the day. I personally love it, and highly recommend it. Heck, it's free! It's a retro-clone of Moldvey D&D extended out to the 20th level so it's not an exact copy of say the Rules Cyclopedia, but is very close. Overall, great game with a nice presentation. Good old school fun!

Beautiful product. It's great to see that the 1st edition (70's-80's ruleset) is coming back. A blast from the past, it give the new generation a feel for what the older generation had and now has again. This product has everything you need: Player & GM guides, monsters, magic (spells & items), etc. Simple to create characters, adventures, what ever you need. It's all straight-forword. A great congradulations to the authors. A must read tome.

Darkest Before the Dawn
by Jim C. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 05/23/2009 02:03:57

This is interesting historically (and not in the sense internal to the game), centering on an event that was quite controversial and not well understood at the time the supplement was written, though it's common knowledge today.

As the blurb mentions, many non-obvious consequences flow from this, some described in detail and others in passing.

What makes the game, I think, is the pre-written character of Kanda Balantu, who in the hands of a thoughtful player may have good reason to question whether he really wants history put back the way it was.

The folks responsible for this product have outdone themslevs. If you like AD&D then this if for you. If you are interested in the first edition era then this one is for you. The book is laid out very well and is true to the original style of the AD&D rulebooks. All the info one needs is located in this single volume. If you have your older AD&D stuff, then of course there are no conersions needed.
