e-Adventure Tiles: Hive

Quite a specialist map, but I'd like to see more "niche" maps out there to inspire and use on demand.

I just so happen to have human/insectoid critters as a recurring foe in my game world. The players met them overground and found a tunnel leading down. "That will be the brood chamber", declared the group leader.

They fought their way through an intitial tunnel, and I began laying out these tiles, one-by-one, as they advanced and fought the insect-men. Another PC commented on the leader's correct premonition . . .

Perfect.

LIKED: These tiles are great size for "fog of war" - usually only showing up to the next corner, if you put them down just as the players advance. Also much more atmospheric than a quick sketch on some plain square paper. It was very quick to take some printouts, cut them and assemble into a believable map.

DISLIKED: Nothing to dislike. However, if it were possible to have more, I would have liked some tunnels without the little cells, and perhaps some more variation with options like "split level" or "joins to other tileset" which you can see in other products by this company.

DISLIKED: Nothing to dislike. Mainly good b&w fantasy pictures of monsters. Slightly edgy/lo-fantasy-spiritual style which I like.

Priced about right on the $2.50 offer, for personal-use-only rights - i.e. you've got the right to look at the pictures, and print them out, but not to publish them or put in a web-site (which would be good for me).

I wish the same level of creativity went into each monster . . . some are just journeyman-like re-renderings of D&D "standards".

The art is at it's best when the creatures are re-interpretted or changed in some way.

LIKED: Creativity in some pictures inspires a few ideas for new monsters.

DISLIKED: Couple of images out of collection not up to same standard as others. Still no demo of actual artwork you are purchasing, which is poor.

QUALITY: Acceptable

VALUE: Satisfied
Has a good selection of non-adventuring NPCs, and their roles. Plenty of source material as well to make a visit to town or village have a feeling of depth.

LIKED: The write-up before each section of stat blocks gives just the right level of detail - enough to inspire a bit of creativity, but not so much it becomes a treatise on medieval life.

DISLIKED: Some cross-over between "careers", tasks and roles, and not 100% compatible with the DMG's settlements rules. I'd like to be able to swap in NPCs with different classes to the more polically active side of my campaign (got to find something relevent and important to do for that 4th-level Bard NPC as suggested per the DMG settlements section).

QUALITY: Very Good

VALUE: Very Satisfied
These are less "necessary" and flexible than the basic corridors and rooms.

But they look great, and a few of them scattered in a dungeon keeps the players guessing.

LIKED: Consistent qualtity & compatible with other SKG tile sets.

DISLIKED: Can't think of any major criticism.

QUALITY: Very Good

VALUE: Satisfied
Players hate to have their characters wade through water . . . which means this tileset is ideal.

I think eventually I will end up buying all the basic e-Adventure series, dungeons, caves and wilderness!

LIKED: Compatibility with the other e-Adventure sets.

DISLIKED: The amount of cuttting out and glueing I now have to do . . .

QUALITY: Very Good

VALUE: Satisfied
The customisation engine is a nice idea. The graphics are very nice indeed.

You need some basic tile-sets from another supplier to work with this product. Oone don't seem to make a standard set of, say, corridors and caves that would allow you construct a dungeon.

Most of the rooms would make great set-piece locations for interesting encounters.

One problem with the variations available, is that you'll probably only want one, maybe two variants of any tile - it's nice to have the choice, but players will probably notice that they are in the same room but without anything on the shelf, if you re-use a location in a single adventure.

LIKED: Looks fantastic.

DISLIKED: Price was high considering number of usable tiles, despite the clever variations available.

QUALITY: Excellent

VALUE: Disappointed
