Okay, if you are on the fence (and I don't blame you because so was I):

The writing style is like "The Idiot's Guide To..." or "Dummies". Considering I was raised on Gary Gygax's random stream of thought and technical measurements, it was a refreshing pleasure to read clear and organized RPG system with tons of visual aids.

Mythic RPG is a free form generic system, based on odds, points, answering questions, comparing stats, and dice rolls, that can be played as a straight RPG, GM screen, family parlor game, idea generator, novel helper, and remains the only RPG system that I have come across that can be played as a surprise solitaire (not a Choose Your Own Adventure linear style). So if you are a RPG fan but can't seem to organize a game at home or on the internet, Mythic is your product. If you do run games with people at your home or elsewhere, this can be a pick up game in any setting. Wanna do a Star Trek RPG? Lord of the Rings? Horror? Cop? Superhero? Real life? Star Wars? Conan? Cyberpunk? Japanese? This is a one-stop solution.

Performing character creation, combat, and events takes practice even after you read them, but the author lays everything out with great examples and instances. Nothing is glossed over or omitted. There is a learning curve, of course, and practice makes perfect, but I already had a session with two family members and they loved it. They didn't feel it was an intimidating RPG like when I tried (and failed) to get them to play with Wizards of the Coast products.

The setting and themes are completely limitless, as are the storylines and character skills. This is the only UNLIMITED and INFINITE RPG system. I haven't played an RPG like it, so it gets full points for innovation in a world of DnD clones and remixed editions. Can the system be rigged? Sure, but the author freely admits this and has recommendations for obnoxious players and even hints for solo players to not cheat. Can the logic be "broken"? Only if you keep asking too many detailed questions (which the author warns against).

If you are not into creating things or random events, this isn't for you.

If you want more ideas on how to make specific settings and genres, check out the other product here (the Bundle Pack has both) and the Yahoo Group for more info.

Tunnels & Trolls Free Rulebook

I remember how the Dragon Magazine and TSR guys were so upset about Tunnels & Trolls back in the day. I always thought it was a blatant copy that was a parody based on their negative remarks, but the modern era positive reviews made me finally download this.

This particular file is a bare-bone free preview. All in all it feels like a stripped down version of Original DnD. It also turns out I was sorely disappointed by the "Choose Your Own Adventure" solitaire mode. This little rulebook failed to make me sold on T&T, although the publisher's site and players swear by this game. For a free product, I wanted a hard sell. It felt like a 1970s/1980s Steve Jackson fighting fantasy gamebook- without his superb writing style.

Not sure why T&T is a good alternative to DnD at this time. Perhaps the simplified rules?

Dungeon Crawler

Yes, it does what it says on Windows XP- you can set up a dungeon crawl. There was a lot of hard work put into creating Dungeon Crawler, but the program feels and looks a bit dated for 2013. It reminds me of Diamond Mind Baseball- a text sim with a lot of details and options, and a reliance on you to use your imagination. DMB grew on me (I was not impressed after installation), so I hope Dungeon Crawler does grow on me, especially with the hefty price tag.

It's not really intuitive so I found myself re-reading the help files a lot and am still discovering things. The online community doesn't seem to be active. This is really a niche product with a small target audience. I was hoping for an easy out-of-the-box crawler to edit for unlimited solo play, but it takes a lot of work. Access database management to add and change tables is also outdated (I, like many others, don't use Microsoft Office).

The random generators for towns, names, and items are all well and good but not worth the price of admission. The rules are D&D 3.5 based but I'm a Basic, 1E, and 2E player, and was hoping for easy rule customization.

The frustrating part of this program is tricking myself into a solo game without cheating or accidentally hitting the wrong button. Monster troops and combat looks confusing. Not yet sure if to hit dice rolls are simmed.

On the plus side: no deceptive advertising, robust database, labor of love, great randomization, nice character and party creation, and cool traps.

Would have preferred a non-sandbox mode for solo adventures (a more structured adventure where I am a player, not a DM/player).

I may come back and edit this review with more experience under my belt. I was on the fence for a while, but have a bit of buyer's regret.
