Classic Traveller Facsimile Edition
Publisher: Game Designers' Workshop (GDW)
by Jonathan M. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 02/13/2023 19:19:37

Very playable even today. This reprint is a very practical introduction to the mechanics of Classic Traveller. And will feel very familiar to anyone playing other editions of Traveller or clones like Cepheus Engine. I bought the print edition and it was very readable in the slim paperback form, maybe not the easiest to reference at the table but lots of bookmarks and print outs in a binder cheaply solves that problem. You can get a lot of gaming done with just this book and some 6-sided dice. If you've never tried Traveller, grab this and roll up a character. You'll immdiately want to go on an adventure once you get a taste!

Neon Blood - Cyberpunk Roleplaying

Let's admit it, it's expensive. But it's really good. Quickly bring your fantasy D&D group over to some gritty cyberpunk without having to teach anyone a new system. The setting is RAD and the production quality is fantastic. Lots of good advice in the book in how to get started running a cyberpunk campaign. Good old fashioned game table examples like we remember from the Basic books. I'm one of those people that learns best by example, so this really helped the game "click" for me.

Pocket-Size Fantasy Character Tools

I can only assume low rating reviews didn't realize this is just the character sheet and a check list. I appreciate the checklist for character creation and wish more systems did this. The character sheet layout is functional and sufficient for the game. Notebook paper or 3x5 index cards would also work well so this isn't strictly necessary. The advantage of printing a 1-page character sheet is the back is blank and available for any other notes a player might want to take.

Black Hack and Slash
Publisher: Amazar Void Productions
by Jonathan M. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 01/19/2020 21:24:55

Adds rules for combat stances in a very Black Hack way that can lead to team work strategies that let more players participate in combat rounds. Adds combat manuevers to character creation and leveling to tie into the combat stances system. Adds weapon qualities system that can provide more variation in weapons for players to find or buy. Other than the weapons quality system, the combat stances, options, and manuevers rules all fit nicely together as a system. The weapons quality rules could be taken seperately into your game without any problems, or useful to world creators looking to fill their world with more interesting weapons.

Overall I am pleased with this supplement. I found the content to be inspiring, and it scratches an itch I've had for more tactical gameplay. The formatting is satisfactory, I can only assume the other comment on errors was for an earlier version.

B/X Essentials: Core Rules — Plain Text Edition
Publisher: Necrotic Gnome
by Jonathan M. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 02/05/2018 13:41:08

An the B/X Essentials series is an amazing resource for any world builder, and that the plain-text editions are available free only sweetens the deal. The PDF or print can make an excellent table reference for any BX/LL game. And this plain text version can be the basis of an elaborate total conversion, a new world with setting specific classes, or a binder full of of your house rules. Mr Norman has done an excellent service to the OSR community by creating this series and distilling down in 31 pages the essentials what may be considered the core definition of OSR.

The production quality has gone way way up in this revised edition. There is tons of great full color art to inspire players and game masters. It adds great new character creation rules to let players really dig into customizing their character. It's a weighty tome with lots of tables for running a space sandbox for many years.

B/X Essentials: Core Rules
Publisher: Necrotic Gnome
by Jon M. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 10/19/2017 15:36:29

This book boils down the B/X rules into a setting agnostic form and is perfect for those world builders that want familiar B/X rule set but are looking to put their own flavor of custom classes, equipment and creatures on top. Looking forward to further books in this series: Classes & Equipment, Spells, and Monsters.

Organization of this book is excellent and the small printed booklet should make a useful table reference for combat, turn sequence, and more. And I intend to use this with my players as a reference, and for my own world building as this fairly lightweight reference has enough of B/X for things important to my own campaign such as ship travel and travel through air.

Beyond the Wall and Other Adventures
Publisher: Flatland Games
by Jon M. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 12/21/2014 15:08:28

This system addresses one of the main complaints my players have of my OSR adventures, that their characters are sometimes not well suited for adventuring and lack much background or connection with the other player characters. The playbook system included in this is pretty amazing, it is not really an OSR way to create characters because you get to pick your class/archetype first and then roll to build up the background and suitable stats for that character. The playbooks are really quick to run though, and I like that I can hand out self-directed playbooks to players so that everyone can create their characters in parallel. The generation process looks like it creates easier characters, not quite as hard-core as classic roll 3d6 for stats and deal with the early demise of several characters in even a novice adventure.

The book claims to do a complete adventure, from scratch, in 4-5 hours. If this is true, this seems like a rather good system to run at a con. Especially given that the overall system will be familiar to most players, who can help assist new players.

I plan to run this system in my next adventure. And that it has mostly classic rules makes it highly compatible with other supplements (I'm a big Swords & Wizardry fan)

The biggest flaw is that there isn't a lot of direction given for a DM to construct a playbook. But there are about 19 playbooks available already to use as examples, so perhaps as I become more familiar with the technique it will seem less daunting.

Overall: A tremendous value.

Wizards and Gunslingers
Publisher: Avalon Classic
by Jon M. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 12/20/2014 02:12:45

Custom system, but well organized. I haven't played it, but giving 5 stars because it's complete with rules, setting, maps, tools to quickly construct scenarios, put together NPCs and good tips for new GMs. Definitely leans towards creative role-playing and story telling and not for crunchy combat. Good for groups that want to have an adventure, rather than groups who want to compare how many hitpoints their weapon can dish out per round. (You can probably sense my own bias here)

Character Death Certificate
Publisher: Stormlord Publishing
by Jon M. [Verified Purchaser]

I like that it has both full size and quarter sheet size. The check boxes are a bit limiting as the first death in the campaign I'm running would be: Stoned by a Goblin. A few checkboxes with fill in the blanks would be nice.
