This was the first scenario that I’ve read from M.T. Black and I have to admit I’m pretty impressed by it. Shadows on the Long Road is pretty much your basic “haunted house” one-shot, but it has enough memorable scenes and NPCs to make it stand out. There’s a good amount of atmosphere and it manages to be just horrific enough without going so far that anyone would be really disturbed by it. If you’re looking for a horror one-shot, especially something for Halloween, this is great. And it’s a steal at $2.

My only real complaint is that I don’t like the way that the portal beneath the house is handled. It feels like the author missed the opportunity to put something really horrific here and just kind of went with “the players should probably walk around for a while and then just leave.” A little disappointing considering this portal is advertised as one of the main selling points of the adventure, but as the DM you could always just come up with some kind of otherworldly threat that could be waiting for the adventurers here.

I ran this adventure last night as a one-shot for four newly-rolled, level-three characters. We completed it in about 6.5 hours with a few breaks for food/drinks/bathroom. It was my first time DMing, and this module made it easy to run the game.

Here are some things I appreciated about it:

  • It was easy to keep track of which NPCs were where in the house given the player's choices, and it was clear how they would react to the PCs.
  • The descriptions of the rooms and the swampy areas really helped set the mood and made it fun to play theater of the mind.
  • The overall premise had my players invested. The amount of people in the pen added gravity to the situation.

Here are some changes that I made:

  • I changed the opening. I described how the players had all seen the same warning in the town square "Travelers on the Long Road Beware: People Missing in Mist," along with some missing persons posters. Then the mayor directed them to "find and rescue" the people. They hired a street rat to guide them to the mists. This was all exposition to get them on the road as quickly as possible without hanging around in town, with a clear directive.
  • I took cropped screenshots of the rooms, blew them up and printed them to lay out before the players. Some of the rooms are a little small for all the characters in the description and the PCs, and if a fight ensues it can get pretty tight.
  • SPOILER: The basic premise is that the warlock’s patron raped the wife, she gave birth to a horrid monster, the wife killed herself, and the warlock lures in travelers to feed to his monstrous daughter. I don’t want to perpetuate the use of rape as a plot devise. I switched “Lord Gideon” to “Lady Mara,” who willingly gave herself to her patron and birthed a monster. Her husband killed himself because Mara betrayed him. Mara was conflicted between caring for her deformed offspring, while also feeling a duty to her patron, and was still ultimately evil.

Overall, the adventure was easy to pick up and run. It accounted for most of the things I wouldn’t have known to prepare for as a new DM, while also allowing for out-of-the-box thinking from the PCs. It was a great day and I recommend this adventure!

My party had fun with this adventure. They found it very creepy and entertaining and ultimately ended up claiming the mysterious manor for themselves in the aftermath. The map is solid, however I wish there was a larger map with the approach area and the grounds, though it's pretty easy to add blank grass/march to the existing map in any online TTRPG system. The structure of the adventure gives a lot of leeway for the party to engage in out of the box thinking and get up to hijinks over night in the mansion and do some fun planning which I thought was great but may catch a newer DM flatfooted if playing with creative players.

I love this adventure! I made a small tweak to add a bit to the horror - each time the clock strikes the quarter hour, one of the players makes a wisdom saving throw or suffer from a voice of the spirit in their head (fear, self loathing or fury) - setting a 15 minute timer in real time added pressure to the players to find the cursed clock to stop the madness...

I will re-use this with new groups, for sure.

Loved this adventure. Ran it as a one-shot for a new group and they were immediately enthralled with the story, the NPCs, and the mystery it all. As a DM, I was having hilarious fun running this adventure.

A great mix of roleplaying opportunities, intriguing skill challenges and combat, and atmospheric exploration. A masterful application of the 3-pillars of D&D.

Definitely recommend this adventure for new and experienced players alike!

.

SPOILERS . . .

When they found themselves locked in, they decided to burn their way out. It had... less than ideal consequences which made the remainder of the adventure a lot more difficult than it needed to be. XD

Fire doesn't solve EVERY problem, people!

Great adventure, I ran it for two relatively new players as a side adventure and they loved it: loved the theme, story and also loved exploring the house. It took us two sessions (3-4h) to complete. Really easy to incorporate in a campaign as a horror themed side adventure. Highly recommend it!

I ran this adventure as a first time DM and it was great, very easy to follow and adapt where necessary. Loved the descriptions provided. I did make up my own maps based on the ones provided to widen hallways but overall I had a lot of fun running it and my players had a good time! Would definitely recommend and I'll be looking at other adventures by M.T. Black to run in the future.

I used this adventure as a sidequest during the SKT campaign and my players really enjoyed it. They suspected something was wrong with the food but they couldn't determine it's true nature and went to sleep without much resistance.

The highlight was definitely the wrestling competition. One of my players bet most of his money against his friend. There was an issue with the wrestling mechanics as they kept escaping the grapple. Perhaps steadily increasing or decreasing the strength of Magnus, to make it harder or easier as the rounds pass, would make it resolve sooner.

They enjoyed exploring the manor but they missed a few rooms. I would suggest relocating the dungeon so that they get to see more of the manor, since after they kill 'The Offspring', the manor collapses.

The butcher and prisoner pen were harrowing, it had an emotional impact on my players. My paladin was eaten alive by The Offspring. My players left all the prisoners and went to the next town, and relayed their story. The villagers were shocked that they left the prisoners behind and refused to help the party until they returned and rescued them. It was a good lesson about finishing what they started.

Thanks for the high quality adventure!

My is an excellent adventure! There were some really tense moments while running this game, and it really did make for a great Halloween (or just horror themed) night. I would totally recommend running this- not a lot of monsters to keep track of and the "dungeon" itself is quite easy to pick up and use.

The only recommendations I have would be to add more guards to wander around so that they never know who will be outside their door!

This is a really well-written dungeon crawl with great imagery. It's also well-structure and only requires minimal preparation work.

Had a good time running this over the Christmas break. I think we must have took around 6 hours to play this.

Highly recommended, although I suggest maybe beefing the Ogre up with some extra actions, or teaming him with another monster, as my players cut him down very easily. I have found this to be a problem with single monster encounters in general, at least at this level of play.

I haven't run this with my group yet but I read through it. It has great atmosphere and seems to be well ploted out. My only minor quible is with the maps, I plan to redo them for my group, but otherwise its a great looking module, will try to add to the review after I play through it.

Another well written M.T.Black adventure. A good story that drives the adventurers to a grisly final chapter.
